IR-36 is a semi-dwarf rice variety developed by Dr. Gurdev Khush at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 1976. It resulted from complex crosses involving 14 parent varieties from six countries, including India, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Japan, and the wild rice species Oryza nivara. This genetic diversity endowed IR-36 with enhanced resistance to various pests and diseases, contributing to its widespread adoption.
